The Author

Julie Gifford retired in 1999 at the age of 42 and went sailing! She and her husband Ed Kettyle jumped on their 44′ sailboat Free Radical and spent the next 7 years sailing – completing a circumnavigation of the planet in 2006. After her circumnavigation Julie worked for a period of time at the North sail loft in St Martin in the eastern Caribbean. Her professional training at the sail loft combined with her personal experience living full time on a boat and a lifelong love of sewing, have inspired her to write this very thorough and practical book.

I was recommended this book by a fellow cruiser. This book has surpassed my expectations. It is everything I need to help me plan projects from the patterns, the list of materials, and the description of how to get the project done. Great illustrations as well. Thank you, thank you, thank you!!!

This really is the only canvas book you will ever need. There are great ideas here for all kinds of projects inside and outside the boat. There is good, detailed information for doing the actual sewing – seams, topstitching, hems – and most important, why to use different techniques for different areas. And construction techniques like patches, reinforcing and pattern-making that is not covered in other books. Starting with simpler exterior project, it goes on all the on to the big jobs like dodgers and sail covers. Then there is a good section on interior upholstery, again describing patterning, design considerations and materials with good illustrations and photos. A section on repairs completes the book. Everything you need to know!
